Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L)
At Woody Point
Special School we believe that a positive school environment, where all
students are included and feel safe and supported improves student learning
outcomes.
Positive Behaviour
for Learning (PB4L) is a whole-school framework which promotes positive
behaviour across the school and helps schools to develop a safe and supportive
learning environment.
In our whole-school
approach, all members of the school community work together to establish
simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. These expectations are
promoted by staff and explicitly taught to students under the 3 banners of “I
can be SAFE, I can be a LEARNER, I can be RESPECTFUL”. These 3 expectations are
expanded upon to form our PB4L Matrix which outlines our nine behaviour
expectations. Our matrix is displayed on posters throughout the school and
inside classrooms. As a whole school we focus on one expectation each fortnight
and all students are explicitly taught the expected behaviours to establish
clear and consistent boundaries.
Student behaviour improves when students know
what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised. We celebrate
and acknowledge positive behaviour through encouragement feedback which is
tailored to meet an individual student’s needs. Acknowledgement might be given
in the form of verbal praise, stamp or sticker charts and classroom rewards, awards
on assembly, a postcard sent home or participation in our end of semester
“Celebration Day”.
The PB4L Framework
allows us to take a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all
students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to be successful
at school. Student outcomes are monitored so that identified students can
receive additional support when needed, and a minority of students can access
intensive support to enable them to engage successfully at school.
